Meghalaya is a treasure trove for adventure lovers, with experiences that go beyond caves and waterfalls. Trek the historic David Scott Trail, a centuries-old trade route that winds through forests, meadows, and streams, offering both challenge and scenic beauty. Walk along the unique bamboo trails suspended over rushing rivers, a thrilling yet traditional way of connecting villages. Add to that caving in Cherrapunji, canyoning in Sohra, trekking to living root bridges, and camping beside crystal-clear rivers, and Meghalaya becomes an all-round adventure hub.
Arunachal Pradesh offers some of the most rugged and scenic adventure routes in Northeast India. The Kameng River, flowing near Seppa and Bhalukpong, is a hotspot for rafting expeditions with rapids ranging from moderate to extreme. On the other hand, the mighty Siang River, passing through Pasighat and beyond, is a paradise for professional rafters, offering Grade IV rapids amidst dramatic gorges and jungle-clad valleys. High-altitude trekking routes in Anini, Tawang, and Mechuka challenge explorers with snow-clad peaks, alpine meadows, and camping in remote regions. Whether it’s river rafting or mountain expeditions, Arunachal is tailor-made for seasoned adventurers.
Nestled in the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, Nameri National Park is a perfect blend of wilderness and adventure. The highlight here is rafting on the Jia Bhoroli (Kameng) River, starting near Bhalukpong and flowing past Nameri’s lush forests. This stretch offers a mix of rapids and calm waters, making it suitable for both thrill-seekers and first-time rafters. Alongside rafting, you can enjoy jungle treks, birdwatching (especially hornbills), and riverside camping, making Nameri one of Assam’s finest soft-adventure destinations.
Often called “God’s Own Garden”, Mawlynnong is the cleanest village in Asia, but beyond its fame lies adventure waiting to be explored. Trek through bamboo trails to sky-view platforms overlooking Bangladesh, walk on centuries-old living root bridges, and camp amidst lush greenery. Just a short ride away, Dawki offers crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River – perfect for kayaking, boating, and cliff jumping. The transparent riverbed and surrounding cliffs make Dawki one of the most surreal adventure spots in all of Northeast India.
Perched high in the Nagaland-Manipur border, the Dzukou Valley is a trekker’s dream. Known as the “Valley of Flowers of the Northeast”, it is famous for its seasonal blooms, rolling meadows, and mystical charm. The trek to Dzukou demands stamina but rewards with panoramic views, natural caves, and campsites under a canopy of stars. During winters, the valley transforms into a white wonderland, making it a year-round adventure hotspot for serious trekkers.
Located in the easternmost corner of India, Dong Valley in Arunachal Pradesh is where the first sunrise of India can be seen. Reaching here is itself an expedition – through mountain trails, bamboo bridges, and steep ascents. Trekkers who camp overnight in Dong are greeted with a breathtaking sunrise over snow-clad peaks, an experience few have witnessed. This destination is for those who crave raw, offbeat adventure far from regular tourist paths.
